I Challenge You...to Pick a Reading Challenge

As you may have seen on my previous post, one of my resolutions for 2018 is to read more. I thought a reading challenge would be a fun way to accomplish this goal while pushing me outside my comfort zone a little bit. I have compiled a list of various reading challenges for 2018, both large and small from publishers, bloggers, publications and more. This list is by no means exhaustive so if you don't find anything that fits what you are looking for, I assure you that it's out there somewhere.

11th Annual Graphic Novel & Manga Challenge: for those wishing to read a more visually artistic format, this is the challenge for you. This is hosted through a Facebook group and requires you to post a link to your review for each book (through Goodreads, your blog, etc.) There are different levels, so you can choose which challenge fits your goal best.

2018 Diversity Challenge: Are you looking to read books about diverse characters or books written by diverse authors? Maybe both? Then this is the challenge for you. You can pick from different levels that best match your intended goal for the year.

50 DIY Reading Challenges from Book Riot: TONS of ideas for challenges of every kind, interest and quantity.

Book Riot's 2018 Read Harder Challenge: 24 specific categories that range from broad to unusually specific. There's something on that list for everyone. Complete the list to earn 30% off at the Book Riot Store. I will be attempting this challenge this year. Wish me luck!

Bookish's 2018 Reading Challenge: A creative challenge category for each week of the year. Keep up with your progress by simply tagging the challenge in the social media platform of your choice.

The Color Coded Challenge/Read it Again, Sam: These challenges are also hosted at the blog,  My Reader's Block, but do not offer a prize like the Follow the Clues Mystery Challenge. Check the blog for even more unique challenges.

Follow the Clues Mystery Challenge: For all of you mystery lovers, let your book determine your next read by following clues and patterns. It can be an author connection, but could also be tied by location, murder weapon, motive, etc. There are different levels for how much you want to read this year and if completed, you will be eligible to enter into a prize drawing. Sign up on the blog site by clicking the link.

Goodreads 2018 Reading Challenge: While the Goodreads challenge does not offer specific categories or incentives, it is a simple way to track the amount of books you have read in a year. If you plan on doing any reading challenges, you may as well track them through Goodreads. You can even build a shelf on Goodreads for the challenge(s) you choose.

Pop Sugar 2018 Reading Challenge: 40 categories with a bonus advanced section. Pop Sugar has a Goodreads group you can join to assist in tracking your reading and talking with other book aficionados.

Read the Year with Penguin: One book a month with broad, interesting categories. Penguin has included a list of some of their titles that fit the bill. When completed, you can enter for a chance to win a stack of 2018 favorites.

My one book challenge to you:

Go to a bookstore of your choice with a special person of your choice. This could be a significant other, best friend, close relative or whomever you want to spend the day with. You are going on a book hunt for each other!

First, set an amount or any other stipulations you might need to discuss first. Try staying away from saying things like "I hate Westerns", because the goal is to read something new that a loved one has picked out with you in mind. The point is that it isn't necessarily something you'd pick out for yourself.

Second, after you buy books for each other, take a moment to inscribe them. Why did you pick it? Be sure to include the date!

Last it to, of course, READ THE BOOK. Do not just add it to the already close-to-toppling pile on your nightstand. Give each other a reasonable deadline. Then meet back up over lunch or drinks and talk about your books. Even if your special person misses the mark, it will be an interesting discussion.

Happy book hunting!
